Resolving interpersonal conflict

This interpersonal conflict occurred last year during an internship that I made in the High Speed Train maintenance center near Paris.
It was about the choice of a method to solve a problem. Indeed both were right and wrong for some aspects of their solutions. They argued during hours as there were alighting incorrect aspects of the other’s solution.  Therefore they didn’t agree on a solution and I had to explain to each other that by combining both solutions it was possible to find a better solution.
The problem was they did not listen each other but tried to find counterarguments. However by combining their solutions they could find a very good way to go through the matter. Indeed this interpersonal conflict was due to an inefficient dialogue between them because they didn’t take the other’s  advices  as a help but as a reproach.
According to you is an inefficient dialogue the most common reason for interpersonal conflict?
